Spotloan Glossary: Loan Terms Explained in Plain English

Short, neutral definitions of the cost, credit and tribal lending terms that show up in Spotloan loan documents and in our guides.

Cost terms

APR (annual percentage rate)

The yearly cost of a loan expressed as a percentage, including interest and certain required fees. APR lets you compare loans of different sizes and lengths on equal footing. Spotloan’s maximum APR is 490%, and first Spotloans are made at that rate, as of October 2026.

Finance charge

The total dollar cost of credit: all the interest and required fees you will pay over the life of the loan if you make every payment as scheduled. Lenders must show it in your loan disclosures, and it is often the clearest single number for comparing offers.

Simple interest

Interest figured only on the principal you still owe, not on interest that has already built up. With a simple-interest loan, each payment covers the interest accrued since your last payment first, and the rest lowers your balance. Spotloan describes its loans as simple-interest loans.

Daily interest rate

The APR divided across the days of the year, used to calculate how much interest builds up each day on your balance. At a 490% APR, the daily rate is roughly 1.34%, which is why paying early or extra can noticeably cut the cost of a Spotloan.

Principal

The amount of money you actually borrow, before any interest or fees are added. As you make payments, part of each one goes toward reducing the principal. On simple-interest loans, a lower principal means less interest accrues each day going forward.

Origination fee

A one-time charge some lenders take for processing a new loan, often deducted from the money you receive or added to your balance. It is included in the APR. Third-party reviews report that Spotloan does not charge an origination fee; always confirm fees in your loan documents.

Late fee

A flat charge some lenders add when a payment arrives after the due date or grace period. Spotloan says it charges no late fees, but missed or late payments keep accruing interest, may be reported to credit agencies, and unpaid accounts may be sent to collections.

Prepayment penalty

A fee some lenders charge if you pay off a loan early, meant to recover interest they would have earned. Spotloan says it has no prepayment penalty, so paying ahead of schedule reduces the total interest you pay on a simple-interest loan.

Representative example

A sample loan showing an amount, term, APR, payment and total cost so readers can see how pricing works. It is an illustration only, not an offer. Ours: $2,500 repaid over 12 monthly payments at 34.99% APR is about $249.90 per month, roughly $2,998.74 total.

Loan types

Installment loan

A loan you repay in a set number of scheduled payments, usually biweekly or monthly, until the balance reaches zero. Each payment covers interest and part of the principal. Spotloan is a short-term, unsecured installment loan with terms of up to 10 months.

Payday loan

A small, short-term loan, typically $500 or less, that is usually due in one lump sum on your next payday, about two weeks later. According to the CFPB, a typical fee of $15 per $100 borrowed equals an APR of almost 400%.

Rollover

Extending a payday loan by paying only the fee and pushing the full balance to a later due date. Each rollover adds a new fee without reducing what you owe, which can trap borrowers in repeated borrowing. Many states limit or ban rollovers.

Payday Alternative Loan (PAL)

A small-dollar loan offered by some federal credit unions under NCUA rules. PAL I loans run $200 to $1,000 over one to six months; PAL II loans go up to $2,000 over up to 12 months. APR is capped at 28%, with an application fee up to $20.

Loan-request (matching) service

A website that collects one loan request and shares it with a network of third-party lenders who may make an offer. It does not lend money or make credit decisions. SpotloanApplyUSA works this way for requests from $200 to $5,000; matching and approval are not guaranteed.

Credit checks, payments and collections

Soft inquiry

A credit check that does not affect your credit scores, used for prequalification, account reviews or checking your own credit. Many lenders start with a soft inquiry before you accept an offer. Only you can see soft inquiries on your credit report.

Hard inquiry

A credit check a lender makes when you formally apply for or accept credit. Hard inquiries appear on your credit report, can lower your scores slightly for a short time, and are visible to other lenders. Several within a short span may signal higher risk.

FICO score

A widely used credit score, generally ranging from 300 to 850, built from information in your reports at the major credit bureaus. Payment history and amounts owed weigh heavily. Spotloan says it does not rely only on FICO when reviewing applications.

Alternative credit bureau

A consumer reporting agency that tracks data the major bureaus often miss, such as short-term and online loan history. DataX and Clarity are examples. Spotloan says it requests data from non-traditional agencies like these and may report loan activity to them.

ACH debit

An electronic withdrawal from your bank account through the Automated Clearing House network, often set up for automatic loan payments. You authorize it in advance. Spotloan says most of its customers pay this way, and schedule changes need at least two business days’ notice.

Collection agency

A company that tries to recover unpaid debts, either for the original lender or after buying the debt. Federal rules limit how third-party debt collectors can contact you. Spotloan says unpaid accounts may be sent to collections, and those accounts stay with that agency.

Tribal lending terms

Tribal lender

A lending business owned and operated by a federally recognized Native American tribe, typically licensed under tribal law rather than by the states where borrowers live. Spotloan is a brand of Ningo Lending LLC, owned by the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians.

Tribal sovereign immunity

A legal principle that federally recognized tribes, and in some cases businesses they own, generally cannot be sued without their consent or congressional authorization. Tribal lenders often assert it; state regulators and courts have disputed how far it extends to online lending.

Lending Commission (tribal)

A regulatory body set up by a tribe to license and oversee lending businesses operating under tribal law. Spotloan says its lending license is issued by the Turtle Mountain Band’s Lending Commission, not by the state where a borrower lives.

Choice-of-law and arbitration clause

Contract terms stating which jurisdiction’s laws govern the agreement and requiring disputes to be resolved by a private arbitrator instead of in court. They can limit class actions. Read these sections of any loan agreement carefully before signing.

Rights and protections

Truth in Lending disclosure

A standardized statement, required by the federal Truth in Lending Act, that shows a loan’s APR, finance charge, amount financed, total of payments and payment schedule before you sign. It is the best place to compare the real cost of offers.

Military Lending Act

A federal law protecting covered active-duty servicemembers and their dependents. It caps the military annual percentage rate (MAPR), which includes most fees, at 36% on many types of consumer credit, and it restricts certain loan terms, such as mandatory arbitration.

Global Privacy Control

A browser setting or extension that sends websites a signal asking them not to sell or share your personal information. Some state privacy laws, including California’s, treat it as a valid opt-out request. Our privacy policy explains how we respond to it.
